Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown softball team hosts the Hoya Invitational this weekend and welcomes Canisius, Colgate and Radford to the nation's capital. The Invitational is a two-day, four-team event and there will be four games of softball each day, with the first day's events scheduled for 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. and Sunday's events scheduled for 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

The Hoyas (6-20) lost both games of a doubleheader in the season opener against James Madison. The Hoyas dropped the first game, 7-1, and lost the second game 8-0 in five innings. On Tuesday, freshman Samantha Peters (Suwanee, Ga./Collins Hill) was named the Co-Independent Player of the Week. In the 20-0 (5) win over Coppin State Peters went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. This is the first POW honor for the softball program, now in its second year on the Hilltop.

Freshmen Jadig Garcia (Zebulon, N.C./East Wake) and Peters both lead the team with a batting average of .324 and 23 hits. Peters leads the team with 11 RBI followed by freshman Suria Bahadue (Miami, Fla./Monsignor Edward Pace) and Garcia (9).

Freshman pitcher Jennifer Connell (Roswell, Ga./Roswell) leads the team with 5.14 earned run average and has won five games this year, recording 63 strikeouts.

Be aware that the Washington D.C. Wirefly National Marathon will take place on Saturday, March 24 with a 7 a.m. start. Please make travel plans accordingly. You can visit the following website, http://www.nationalmarathon.com/ for a map of the course and further information.
