Washington, D.C. - Longwood scored eight runs on 12 in five innings en route to an 8-0 win over Georgetown, completing a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Farmville, Virginia. The Lancers won the first game, 6-0.
The losses drop the Hoyas to 8-33 overall, while Longwood improves to 18-14 overall.
In the opener, the Hoyas put runners on base in two of the first three innings and mounted a pair of rallies in the fifth and sixth innings, but could not muster a run off of Longwood starter Rachel Mills.
In the fifth, freshman Jennifer Connell (Roswell, Ga./Roswell) and junior first baseman Christine Calabrese (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings) hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, but Mills was able to get out of the jam.
In the sixth inning, freshman designated hitter Jadig Garcia (Zebulon, N.C./East Wake) hit a leadoff single and moved to third after a double from freshman shortstop Samantha Peters (Suwanee, Ga./Collins Hill). Mills, however, induced a pair of ground balls to the mound for two outs and, after walking junior Brittany Sonnichsen (Madison, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) to load the bases, retired the final batter.
Freshman third baseman Demetria Cipriano (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter) had two hits for the Hoyas, while Garcia, Peters, Connell and Calabrese each had one hit. Connell threw six innings, yielding six runs (four earned) on seven hits, with one walk and five strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Longwood pitcher Ashley Forsyth threw five innings of one-hit ball as the Lancers posted an 8-0 win. Longwood scored two runs apiece in the first two innings and then added one in the fourth and three more in the fifth to close out the win.
Cipriano had the lone hit for the Hoyas, a leadoff single in the first. Freshman pitcher Sarah Kamenski (Mountain View, Calif./St. Francis) allowed eight earned runs on 12 hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 4.1 innings.
The Hoyas are back in action on Wednesday, April 18, hosting George Mason at Guy Mason Field. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
