Washington, D.C. - Student-athletes from several Georgetown athletic teams will be among more than 1,000 University students, faculty, staff and family members who will participate in an overnight Relay for Life to support the American Cancer Society.
The Relay for Life will begin on Saturday, April 21 at 7 p.m. and run through Sunday, April 22 at 7 a.m. at the Multi-Sport Field on the Hilltop.
More than 100 relay teams have been formed by athletic teams, student clubs, service programs, residence hall floors and groups of friends. Each team will have at least one member walking throughout the entire 12 hours.
Other student groups will provide food, entertainment and financial support during the event.
In just its first year, the Georgetown University Relay for Life has already raised nearly $250,000 for the American Cancer Society, and is poised to be one of the largest college Relays in the history of the national Relay for Life. This year, more than 4,800 Relay for Life events will be held nationwide, sponsored by colleges and universities, schools, churches and community groups.
Groups of student-athletes have formed 10 different teams for the event this weekend. The heavyweight crew team will have two teams active, with one group of eight captained by sophomore Collin Eckles (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) and another of seven captained by senior David Carter (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown), while 13 members of the women's lightweight crew team will be involved, led by team captain junior Julia McCarthy (Narberth, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy).
In addition, senior Megan Cellucci (Malvern, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) is leading a group of 13 players from the field hockey team. The Hoya baseball and softball teams, who are playing games this weekend, will not participate, but took part in the fund-raising efforts.
The Hoya football team has made up four teams, with the Classes of 2008, 2009 and 2010 participating. Georgetown Head Coach Kevin Kelly and members of his staff have also formed their own team. Junior Darren Craft (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School) leads the class of '08, while sophomore Brent Tomlinson (Hoffman Estates, Ill./St. Viator) is the captain for the class of '09 and freshman Jon Cassidy (Alton Bay, N.H./St. John's Prep) is in charge of the freshman class.
