Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team has a number of its players involved in summer leagues across the United States. From Vermont to Texas to California, the Hoyas have 13 student-athletes participating in baseball leagues this summer.
The Hoyas currently have six players spending their summer in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Junior Michael Gaggioli (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) is currently 1-2 for the Vermont Mountaineers, and holds a 1.44 ERA while leading the team in starts, innings and strikeouts. He is joined on the team by fellow pitchers Cary Piligian (Troy, Mich./Detroit Jesuit) and Alex Meyer (Pompton Plains, N.J./Don Bosco Prep). Piligian has made four relief appearances while Meyer is 0-1 with a 2.31 ERA.
Freshman Tim Adleman (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) is currently 1-0 with the North Adams SteepleCats. Freshman Jack Bender (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) leads his team, the Pittsfield Dukes, with six appearances out of the bullpen. The only non-pitcher in the sextet, junior Matt Iannetta (Providence, R.I./St. Raphael Academy) has played in 11 games and is third in runs batted in for the Newport Gulls.
Two Georgetown players are spending the summer a little closer to home in the Cal Ripken Senior Collegiate Baseball League. Sophomore Jimmy Saris (Great Falls, Va./Langley) is off to a blistering start with the Bethesda Big Train. The Big Train, who play their home games at Shirley Povich Field, have benefited from Saris' early season success. The right-hander is off to a 3-0 start with a 0.60 ERA. He has allowed only one run on four hits over 15 innings of work while holding opposing batters to a .082 batting average. Meanwhile, sophomore Sean Baumann (Tampa, Fla./Freedom) is trying to provide some pop to the Rockville Express lineup.
Junior Erick Chandler (Somerset, N.J./Rutgers Prep) is spending his summer on the West Coast pitching for the Southern California Fire of the Western Baseball Association. In his first and only start thus far, Chandler threw a gem going seven full innings, striking out five batters and allowing only two hits en route to the win.
Sophomore Kelly Muir (South Pasadena, Calif./Loyola) has appeared in all 20 games this season for the McLean Raiders of the Clark Griffith Collegiate Baseball League. He currently leads the team in runs, hits, doubles and stolen bases.
Freshman Billy Concannon (Dallas, Texas/St. Mark's School) is 1-2 during five relief appearances for the Denton Outlaws of the Texas Collegiate League. He has a 3.68 ERA, but is holding opposing batters to a .190 batting average.
Two other Hoyas, freshmen Tom Elliott (Blue Bell, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) and Chip Malt (Boston, Mass./Buckingham Browne & Nichols), round out the group of summer ball players. Elliott is playing in the Delaware County Baseball League and Malt is a member of the first place Cassell Club of the Boston Intercity Baseball League.
