Washington, D.C. - Georgetown University head women's soccer coach Dave Nolan has announced the Hoyas 2007 schedule. Georgetown will take on six teams that appeared in the NCAA Tournament a year ago including national runner-up Notre Dame. The Hoyas will also take on five of the top six place finishers in the BIG EAST from last season while playing their first five games on the road.
Georgetown opens the 2007 season at the D.C. Invitational hosted by George Washington University. The Hoyas will kick-off against Richmond at noon on Friday, August 31 and then take on Manhattan on Sunday, September 2 at noon. Richmond finished with a 3-13-2 record while Manhattan enjoyed an impressive season in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, going 12-5-2.
After a trip to Harrisonburg, Va. to play James Madison on Tuesday, September 4, the Hoyas will stay in the commonwealth of Virginia for the George Mason Tournament. The Hoyas will take on George Washington on Friday, September 7 at 5 p.m. and Stony Brook at noon on Sunday, September 9. Last season, the Blue and Gray defeated GW, 3-0, as senior Karen Waskewich (Laytonsville, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) netted the eventual game-winner.
Georgetown opens their 2007 home slate with three non-conference game vs. American on Wednesday, September 12 at 3 p.m., St. Joseph's on Friday, September 14 at 3 p.m. and Delaware on Sunday, September 16 at 1 p.m. Last year, Georgetown defeated AU, 2-0, as senior Sarah Fetters (Coral Springs, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) notched the game-winner and junior Brittany Berry (Gaithersburg, Md./Georgetown Visitation) tallied two assists.
The Hoyas will look to avenge road losses last season to Villanova and Seton Hall when GU opens BIG EAST play on September 21 and September 28 against the schools, respectively. The Villanova game will be played at 3 p.m., while the Seton Hall game is part of a Georgetown women's-men's doubleheader that starts at noon.
The end of September and the first half of October will see the Hoyas on the road for five straight road games. The Blue and Gray will travel north to play BIG EAST runner-up Rutgers on Sunday, September 30 at noon and then travel south to tangle with South Florida on Friday, October 5 at 7:30 p.m. After that, Georgetown travels to the midwest for three BIG EAST games. On Sunday, October 7, the Hoyas will take on American Division runner-up Marquette at 1 p.m. That will be followed the next weekend with bookend games against BIG EAST Champion and NCAA runner-up Notre Dame on Friday, October 12 at 7:30 p.m. and then DePaul on Sunday, October 14 at 1 p.m.
Georgetown closes the season with home games against last year's American Division winner, West Virginia, along with Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Louisville. The schools that compete in the annual Backyard Brawl visit the Hilltop for games on Friday, October 19 at 3 p.m. and Sunday, October 21 at 1 p.m. While the next weekend will feature a lot of red and black as Cincinnati visits on Friday, October 26 at 3 p.m. and Louisville closes the home - and regular season - schedule on Sunday, October 28 at 1 p.m.
Six of Georgetown's 11 BIG EAST opponents went on to the NCAA Tournament last season including Villanova, Rutgers, Marquette, Notre Dame, West Virginia and Louisville.
The BIG EAST Tournament Play-in and Quarterfinals are slated for November 1 and November 3 on campus of the higher seed before the BIG EAST Final Four is set for November 9-11 on the campus of the University of West Virginia in Morgantown, W. Va.
