Washington, D.C. - Senior forward Kieraah Marlow (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) scored six of the Hoyas's final eight points and the Georgetown University women's basketball got past visiting Providence, 59-52 Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at McDonough Arena. Marlow finished with a game-high 14 points to go along with eight rebounds.
The Blue and Gray had a hard time putting away the pesky Friars. Georgetown led 46-37 with 10:35 to go before Providence tied the game at 51-51 at the 7:04 mark.
Providence freshman and Baltimore native Mi-Khida Hankins made the second of two free throws to give the Friars a 52-51 lead with 6:36 left.
Neither team scored for 3:30.
GU senior Kristin Heidloff (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) recorded a steal and on the Hoya offensive possession, Marlow used a post move to muscle in a layup for a 53-52 Georgetown lead with 3:00 remaning.
PC missed two free throws on the other end before Marlow went to work again on the right block, getting a layup to fall for a 55-52 edge for the home team.
Providence missed its final four shots from the floor while Marlow and sophomore Shanice Fuller (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) combined to go 4-4 from the charity stripe for the final margin.
Georgetown sophomore Meredith Cox (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) finished with 12 points, including four three-pointers and freshman Monica McNutt (Suitland, Md./Adacemy of the Holy Cross) finished with six points, seven rebounds and two steals
"We had some senior day emotions going early and we got off to a bad start," said head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy. "We had to battle today and we knew it would be. Both Providence and Georgetown were playing for their playoff lives.
"Kieraah (Marlow) realized she was going to have to take us on her back a bit and she did that," Williams-Flournoy continued. "Getting to the BIG EAST tournament was one of our goals expecially after we were picked 16th in the pre-season poll. We didn't let the bad ranking effect us, finishing better that people anticipated."
Georgetown, who trailed 27-23 at halftime, shot 44 percent from the floor for the game and 50 percent in the second half (12-24). The Hoyas' seven three-pointers were the most since GU netted nine treys in the home win over Syracuse on February 2.
Providence received 14 points from Emily Cournoyer and 11 points from Brittany Dorsey. Shantee Darrian hauled in a game-high 1- boards.
Georgetown has a quick turnaround and plays at Pittsburgh, who is receiving votes in the Associated Press poll on Monday, March 3 in the regular-season finale for both schools.
