Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team scored its most runs in a game since 1999 when they cruised past Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday afternoon, 23-3. The Hoyas broke the school record for home runs in a game with six and came within two hits of the school record for a single game, which stands at 25.
Junior Sean Baumann knocked in six runs with a two-run blast in the seventh and a grand slam in the eighth. The Tampa native went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and is now tied for second on the team with 15 runs batted in this season. Freshman Sean Lamont went 4-for-6 with two runs scored and three driven in, while senior Matt Iannetta and sophomore Chip Malt each scored three times and drove in two runners on the day.
Junior Jimmy Saris evened his record at 2-2 after allowing three runs over five innings of duty. Sophomores Alex Meyer and Jack Bender teamed with senior Daniel Kennedy to hold the Mount to two hits over the final four frames, striking out seven.
The Blue and Gray got things going early with a four-run first inning where sophomore Dan Capeless picked up a RBI single, freshman Erick Fernandez hit a sacrifice fly and senior Matt Harrigan came home on one of two-run scoring errors committed by the Mount.
After Iannetta and Lamont went back-to-back starting off the third inning, the two would do more damage in the fourth with Iannetta hitting a run-scoring single and Lamont delivering a two-run basehit for a 9-0 GU lead.
The fifth inning would be the first of two, six-run frames in the contest for Georgetown. Harrigan's RBI single was followed by a double from junior Kelly Muir and two-run single off the bat of junior catcher Greg Pustizzi. The Hoyas would go back-to-back for a second time when sophomore Chip Malt hit a two-run shot to right-center and classmate Tommy Lee slapped a solo bomb to left.
In the eighth, the Blue and Gray would complete their afternoon's work with another six-spot. Freshman Dan Godefroi got in on the action with a RBI single to leftfield and after Baumann's second homer, freshman Billy Henig singled to center for the final total.
The Hoyas will now travel down to Tampa, Fla. for a three-game set this weekend against BIG EAST foe South Florida.
