COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Georgetown University softball team (18-28) was swept by University of Maryland, as the Terrapins squeaked by the Hoyas, 1-0 in the first game, before winning 8-0 in six innings in the second gameat Robert E. Taylor Stadium on Tuesday evening.
GU managed just four hits over the two games with two of them coming off the bats of sophomore Demetria Cipriano (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter) and freshman McKinley Cooper (Langley, Va./McLean) in the first inning of the first game.
In game one, the Terrapins got on the board quickly, as Sarde Stewart earned a one-out walk, then scored when Brittany Bessho tripled just over the head of Hoyas' centerfielder Aimee Moffat (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) to take a 1-0 after one inning.
It was a pitchers duel the rest of the way, as sophomore Jennifer Connell (Roswell, Ga./Roswell) and Maryland's Sarah Dooley surrendered just two more hits each for Maryland to hold on for a 1-0 victory.
Connell (13-20) took the loss, allowing one run on four hits over 6.0 innings.
Maryland wasted little time scoring in the second game, putting three runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning, with Stewart and Kerry Hickey each driving in runs for the Terps. It was a lead they would never relinquish.
The Terps added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Stewart, Brittany Bessho and Hickey drove in runs, before scoring two in the bottom of the sixth inning giving Maryland a 8-0 lead and the victory.
Freshman Melissa Conners (Wellington, Fla./Wellington) took the loss, allowing eight runs, four earned on 12 hits over 6.0 innings.
After a weekend off the Hoyas return to the field on April 16 when they travel to George Mason for a doubleheader with the Patriots.
