WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown University field hockey team has announced the Class of 2012, consisting of eight student-athletes who will begin competition for the Hoyas for the 2008-09 academic year. The class is Tiffany Marsh's first since being named head coach prior to the 2007 season.
"I am thrilled about the potential of the class of 2012," Marsh said. "We have a very diverse group coming from all over the country. I think their skill and work ethic will compliment our returning players and enable us to achieve great things this season."
The Hoyas incoming class hails from several geographic locations, as seven states are represented by the eight student-athletes. Marsh and assistant coach Emily Beach were able to find local talent as well, signing two from Maryland, including 2007 Washington Post and Baltimore Sun All-Met Player of the Year, Hope Battista, and one from Virginia.
Hope Battista - Defense - Crofton, Md./South River Battista, a two-time Washington Post All-Met selection, was named the 2007 All-Met Field Hockey Player of the Year ... Earned Baltimore Sun All-Met Player of the Year honors in 2007 ... Helped lead her high school, South River, to two state championships in her four-year career.
Bailey DeWitt - Defense - Atherton, Calif./St. Francis DeWitt, a three-year letterwinner, helped lead St. Francis to three consecutive West Catholic Athletic League Championships ... During her junior and senior year, St. Francis went 36-0-4, carried by a defense that allowed just eight goals in those two seasons.
Tracey Kentner - Midfield - Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day Kentner, a four-year letterwinner and starter, served as team captain her senior year ... Nominated for a PDS ESPY for "Play of the Year" for her goal against Charlotte Country Day ... Voted second team Charlotte Weekly after her senior season.
Kalli Krumpos - Midfield - Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community Krumpos, a four-year letterwinner and two-year co-captain, was named the Illinois High School Field Hockey Association Player of the Year in 2007 ... Named team's most valuable player for three years ... A member of the North Suburban Conference Athletic Leadership Council.
Sarah Levin - Goalkeeper - Norfolk, Va./Maury Levin, a three-year starter in goal, helped lead her high school, Maury, to three consecutive regular season district championships (2005-07) ... Named first team all-district and second team all-region in 2006 ... Participated in the United States Field Hockey Association Futures program in 2007 ... Earned the Tonelson Award for Leadership in 2008.
Ai Nishino - Forward - Rye, N.Y./Rye Nishino, a three-year letterwinner, earned all-league and all-section honorable mention honors following her senior year ... Helped lead Rye High School to a New York State Championship during her senior year ... Also earned three letters apiece in track and lacrosse.
Lila Samperton - Midfield - Bethesda, Md./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes Samperton, a four-year letterwinner, earned 2007 Washington Post First Team All-Met honors, while helping lead St. Stephen's/St. Agnes to a state championship ... Earned First Team all-ISL and VIS all-state honors during her senior year ...
Meggie Taylor - Midfield - Ardmore, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy Taylor, a four-year letterwinner and three-time Catholic Academy League All-Star, earned First Team Pennsylvania All-State and First Team All-Main Line honors in 2007 ... She was selected as a National Field Hockey Coaches Association Academic All-American ...A three-time gold medal winner at the National Field Hockey Festival.
