Rutgers Gets Past Georgetown in BIG EAST Opener

Sept. 26, 2008

Box Score

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University field hockey squad (0-9, 0-1 BIG EAST) dropped a tough, 3-0, loss to the No. 17 Rutgers University Scarlet Knights (8-1, 1-1 BIG EAST) Friday evening at the University of Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. The game was the squad's conference opener as the team begins its third season in the BIG EAST.

Despite a strong Hoya defense in the opening minutes, it was the Scarlet Knights that struck first scoring at 13:32. Leading scorer, Amy Lewis, took a shot off of a penalty corner that was blocked but the rebound returned to her stick and she found the back of the cage to make it 1-0.

Rutgers doubled the score with another goal off of a penalty corner as Chelsey Schwab fired the shot that took an odd hop. GU keeper Deirdre Crovo laid out for the save but the ball made it over her and bounced into the goal.

At the break, the Scarlet Knights led 2-0, but Georgetown had its chances holding a 5-4 edge in shots.

"I think at certain points we were dominating the game, but Rutgers made the most of their set pieces, their corners," said Head Coach Tiffany Marsh. "The steps we're taking are leaps and bounds now. We're seeing a marked improvement every day."

A late yellow card in the first half meant the Hoyas would play a man down through the first five minutes of the second. GU not only weathered the disadvantage, but took a pair of penalty corners during the series notching two shots on goal.

The defense stayed strong throughout much of the second half, but with less than seven minutes in the contest, Lewis tallied her second of the day off of a long run down the left side of the field making the final 3-0.

The Hoya offense had eight shots, seven on goal marking one of its best outings of the season. Rutgers tallied ten shots with six on goal. The squads were awarded four penalty corners apiece.

Marsh was pleased with the squad's effort in its first BIG EAST game. "This is where our real season starts," said Marsh. "This is the BIG EAST, everything before this was just a warm-up. The energy and the mentality that the team came out with today was just awesome, I can only hope it will continue."

Georgetown will be back in action on Tuesday as it hosts Rider in a non-conference game. Push back is scheduled for 6 p.m.
