Feb. 13, 2009

Box Score

Miami, Fla. - The Georgetown University softball team (0-1) fell to Temple, 6-3 in its season-opener at the FIU Tournament in Miami, Fla. on Friday morning. CF McKinley Cooper (McLean, Va./Langley) sparked the Hoyas offense, going 2-for-3 with a run scored, while 3B Demetria Cipriano (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter) and 2B Kelsie Hanson (Katy, Texas/Katy) each drove in runs in the loss.

Temple got on the board first as Amanda Carver led off with a single to centerfield. Carver went on to steal second, move to third on a sacrifice bunt, then score on an error to give Temple a quick 1-0 lead. The Hoyas answered right away as Kelsie Hanson (Katy, Texas/Katy) drew a one-out walk then stole second and took third on a throwing error from the catcher. Hanson crossed the plate on a balk to tie the score at one run apiece.

The Owls seemingly broke the game open in the top of the third, rallying with one out. Courtney Norene came around to score on an error and Jess Hirschbuhl drew a bases loaded walk to allow Nicole Lee to score Temple's second run of the inning. Haley Gilles later scored when Samantha Schoell reached on an error.

The Hoyas answered in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Kristi Preuss (LaPlata, Md./LaPlata) drew a lead-off walk before moving to second on Cooper's single. With one out, Cipriano singled to centerfield to drive in Preuss, closing the gap to two runs. Hanson flew out to centerfield on a ball deep enough to drive in Cooper, cutting the Owls lead to one run.

GU's comeback would fall short, as Temple added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to help the Owls to a 6-3 victory.

In her collegiate debut, freshman Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) went 6.1 innings, allowing five runs, just two earned, on six hits to take the loss. Melissa Conners (Wellington, Fla./Wellington) finished the last two-thirds of an inning in the loss.
