Washington, D.C. - Senior defender Jordan Trautman (Mystic, Conn./Loomis Chaffee School) and junior midfielder Ashby Kaestner (Trappe, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) were both named to the 2009 Tewaaraton Trophy "watch list" by the women's selection committee. The Tewaaraton Trophy is presented annually to the top male and female lacrosse player in the country. Trautman and Kaestner were two of 45 players in the nation and nine from the BIG EAST selected to the list.
Trautman, a senior captain, was a Second Team All-America honoree and a member of the BIG EAST First Team. The Mystic, Conn., native led the squad last season in groundballs with 45 and was part of a stingy defense that helped the Hoyas to their 12-7 record and ranked 22nd in the nation in scoring defense (9.5 gpg). Trautman has been a mainstay in the lineup for GU starting every game of her career on the Hilltop. She will be expected to run the backline this season.
Kaestner was a First Team All-America honoree as well as All-BIG EAST selection and team MVP. Last season, she became just the second sophomore in program history to receive a nod to the All-American first team after leading the squad in goals (52), points (65), draw controls (47) and caused turnovers (33). The Trappe, Md., native will look to continue her impressive career in her junior season as the anchor in the middle of the field for the Hoyas and a target for every opposing defense. Kaestner started every game last season in her sophomore campaign. This is her second selection to the Tewaaraton Trophy watch list.
Georgetown has had three players named finalists for lacrosse's highest honor, most recently, Coco Stanwick in 2006 and Assistant Coach Michi Ellers in 2004. Erin Elbe was GU's lone winner, receiving the award after her outstanding play in 2002.
The Hoyas will open the season against George Washington on Saturday at Multi-Sport Field. The draw is scheduled for 1 p.m. Live stats and a webcast will be available on www.GUHoyas.com.
