Georgetown Starts Home BIG EAST Play With St. John's, Opens Citi Field on Sunday

March 26, 2009

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown University baseball team opens home BIG EAST play this weekend when they host the St. John's Red Storm on Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. from Shirley Povich Field. The two teams will then hit the road for the series finale in Flushing, N.Y. on Sunday at 1:10 when the programs play in the first game at the brand new Citi Field, home of the New York Mets.

The last series between the two was at Shirley Povich Field in 2007 when the Red Storm swept the Hoyas in a three-game set. Matt Barnes threw a no-hitter in the first game of the series as St. John's outscored GU, 28-4, during the weekend set. Georgetown has lost the last 10 meetings between these two BIG EAST rivals and 18 of the last 22 since 2000.

Mets Connections
William Alfred "Bill" Shea (June 21, 1907 - October 2, 1991) was an American lawyer and a name partner of the prominent law firm of Shea & Gould. He is probably better known as the founder of the Continental League, which was instrumental in bringing National League baseball back to New York City with the New York Mets, and for being the name of that team's stadium for 45 years.

Shea began undergraduate work at New York University, where he was admitted to the Zeta Psi fraternity, and later graduated from Georgetown University and Harvard Law School. He was a member of the Georgetown varsity basketball team.

Former Hoya Matthew Bouchard (East Greenwich, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) was selected in the 11th round of the MLB Draft by the New York Mets in 2007. The junior shortstop played every game that season for the Hoyas while leading the team in runs batted in with 41. He started with the Brooklyn Cyclones of the New York-Penn League and recently has been suiting up with the Savannah Sand Gnats of the South Atlantic League.

Hoya Notes
Leadoff hitter Tommy Lee currently leads the league in stolen bases with 15 and is ranked among the top 25 nationally. He also leads the team in doubles (7) and hits (30), while ranking second in runs (21) and third in batting average (.333) and total bases (37).

Sophomore Sean Lamont is second in the BIG EAST in home runs with eight and ranks among the top 30 nationally. He is also leading the team in total bases with 52, RBI's with 27, slugging percentage (.584) and runs with 22.

Scouting the Storm
Sophomore right handed pitcher Corey Baker of Pittsburgh was tabbed the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, while junior first baseman Tim Morris of St. John's was named the BIG EAST baseball Player of the Week.

Morris helped St. John's to a 3-0 start in BIG EAST play as the Red Storm swept their season-opening series against Villanova. The junior hit .600 (12-for-20) with four doubles, a home run and eight RBIs in five games last week. Morris has hit safely in 17 of 18 games this season, including all five last week as the Red Storm went 4-1.

St. John's swept the opening weekend of BIG EAST play against Villanova for the second straight season. The Red Storm are 7-0 at home this year. Offensively, St. John's has pounded out at least 10 hits in 13 of 18 games. In the past six games, St. John's has 99 hits (16.5 per game).
