WASHINGTON - Two members of the Georgetown University men's soccer team were named to national teams of the week after the Hoyas went 2-0 defeating a pair of BIG EAST opponents this past weekend. Forward Uche Onyeador (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) earned a place on TopDrawerSoccer.com's Team of the Week and defender Alex Verdi (Ivyland, Pa./Germantown Academy) was awarded a spot on the College Soccer News Team of the Week. This is the first national honor for both players.
Onyeador had a big week for the Hoyas posting the game-winning goal against Rutgers and assisting on the game-winner in the 2-0 victory over Villanova. The sophomore forward has started six games for Georgetown so far this season and has two goals and one assist for five points to his credit.
Verdi was a major factor in the win over Villanova and has been a part of all seven of Georgetown's shutouts so far this season. The junior defender had a number of big blocks in the box against the Wildcats who had some solid looks at the net. He also helped lead the defense that blanked Rutgers, 1-0. Verdi has started all nine games this season and has one assist so far this year.
Georgetown is 6-2-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play. GU moved into the national polls this week taking the No. 13 position in the Soccer America rankings. The Hoyas were on the cusp of the NSCAA rankings receiving 30 votes just behind Dartmouth with 42.
The Blue & Gray will travel to Storrs, Conn., this Saturday to face UConn at 7 p.m.
