WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad held its annual banquet Saturday evening on campus. The banquet honored the 2010 squad for its accomplishments with all eight graduated seniors returning for the event. The six team awards were announced and the squad's accomplishments were recognized.
Senior Molly Ford (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep) was honored with two awards, earning the Most Valuable Player distinction and the Kim Simons Coach's Award, which is presented to the player that best demonstrates the qualities of coachability, positive attitude and leadership. The team co-captain was a Second Team All-American and First Team All-Region and First Team All-BIG EAST selection. At the conference tournament, she was also named the BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player. Ford started all 19 games for the Hoyas and led the team in goals (51), assists (26) and points (76).
Senior Sarah Seats (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) won the Most Improved Award. She started all 19 games this past year on the attack. Seats posted 19 ground balls, 15 draw controls and 12 caused turnovers over the course of the season, as well as nine goals and three assists.
Senior goalkeeper Caitlin Formby (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) won the Bulldog Award, which is given to a player that displayed outstanding effort and contributions to the squad. Formby started all 19 games and led the team in saves and save percentage. Overall, she recorded 147 saves and 11.26 goals allowed average against 460 shots faced, posting a 13-5 record. Formby was an All-BIG EAST honoree as well.
Freshman Sophia Thomas (Lutherville, Md./Maryvale Prep) was named the Sheehan Stanwick Rookie of the Year after an outstanding first season. Thomas appeared in all 19 games, scoring 18 times and contributing two assists. She also had 33 ground balls, 14 draw controls and 23 caused turnovers.
Sophomore Kelly Barnes (St. Davids, Pa./Radnor) rounded out the awards ceremony receiving the Denis Kanach Hoya Award which is given for the unsung hero who best demonstrates unselfish play and true team spirit. Barnes had 22 caused turnovers to rank third on the squad, as well as five goals and one assist on the season for six points. She ranked third in ground balls with 28 and fourth in draw controls posting 19. Barnes earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Second Team.
Volunteer Assistant Coach Stefanie Sparks was also honored as the squad's 13th man. Sparks has been a volunteer assistant for three seasons while attending Georgetown Law School. 2010 was her final year with program and the coaching staff honored her with the award recognizing her contributions both on and off of the field.
The night concluded with the playing of the 2010 highlight video and remarks from both the Class of 2010 and the Class of 2011.
Georgetown finished the season with a record of 13-6 and a perfect 8-0 mark in the BIG EAST. The Hoyas won the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship as well as the tournament title for the first time in program history. Georgetown earned the conference's automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament marking GU's 11th tournament bid in the past 12 seasons. The Blue & Gray also posted a ten-game win streak, the longest in program history.
The Hoyas will continue their fall schedule appearing in a tournament at Johns Hopkins tomorrow.
