WASHINGTON (AP) - The No. 13/13 Georgetown University women's basketball team opened the season with a big 79-41 victory over the August State Jaguars (0-1) Saturday afternoon at McDonough Arena. The Hoyas led the entire game to move to 1-0 on the season and continue its 16-game home win streak. Sophomore guard Sugar Rodgers (Suffolk, Va./King's Fork) led the way with 13 points as four Hoyas scored in double figures.
Georgetown opened with a layup from Rodgers and never looked back. Augusta State cut the lead to seven after back-to-back three's at the 13:49 mark of the first half, but that would be as close as the Jaguars would get. The Blue & Gray staged an 11-0 run, including seven points from senior guard Monica McNutt (Suitland, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) to make it 24-6..
The Hoyas allowed just eight more ASU points in the remaining minutes of the half to go into the break with a 29-point lead, 43-14. GU shot 48.6 percent, outrebounded the Jaguars, 23-11, and forced 17 turnovers in the half.
The coaching staff was awarded the luxury of mixing up the lineup in the second half as every Hoya that played saw significant minutes. Georgetown maintained a comfortable advantage continuously changing the lineup and working on its pressure defense.
The lead swelled to as much as 42 when GU posted a 20-0 run spanning six minutes. Late in the game ASU's Blaire Egardo hit three-consecutive three's to cut it to 33, but the Hoyas came back making the final 79-41.
Rodgers led the way with 13, while juniors Adria Crawford (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) and Alex Roche (Bellmore, N.Y./St. Michael's Academy) each added 11. The Blue & Gray had ten players score, with four in double digits. GU outrebounded the Jaguars, 42-29, and forced 31 turnovers on 19 steals. The Hoyas tallied 36 points off of turnovers utilizing its trapping press and half-court defense.
Egardo had a team-best 20 points and seven rebounds for August State.
