Georgetown Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader from George Mason
WASHINGTON - Freshman Corbin Blakey (Alpharetta, Ga./Centennial) hit an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to drive in the winning run in the first game and Georgetown scored four runs in the top of the 10th inning and the Hoyas swept a doubleheader from George Mason at Captains Park on the campus us Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va. The Hoyas won the first game, 5-4, in the eighth inning of a regularly scheduled seven-inning game and posted an 8-4 win in the nightcap.
The Hoyas improve to 4-1 overall with the wins, while George Mason falls to 3-3. Georgetown was originally slated to play New York Tech at home, but the series was moved to CNU's campus. A winter storm that hit the New York Metropolitan area prevented New York Tech from making the trip. George Mason, meanwhile, was slated to play Army, but the Cadets could not make the trip because of the same storm.
In the nightcap, Georgetown led 4-2 before Mason tied the game on a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Hoyas, however, wasted little time in responding, loading the bases in the top of the inning and scoring four times to secure the 8-4 win and doubleheader sweep.
Junior catcher Erick Fernandez (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah) hit a leadoff single, moved to third on a double off the wall in left from junior third baseman Sean Lamont (Houston, Texas/Bellaire) and an intentional walk to senior left fielder Billy Cupelo (Franklin, Mass./Bishop Feehan) loaded the bases. Junior first baseman Dan Capeless (Centerville, Mass./Boston College H.S.) drove in what proved to be the winning run with a bases loaded walk and senior center fielder Tommy Lee (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) cleared the bases with a triple to right-center, giving the Hoyas an 8-4 lead.
Freshman Neal Dennison (Houston, Texas/Lamar) threw 4.1 innings and struck out six batters to pick up his first collegiate win. Junior Jared Cohen (Phoenixville, Pa./The Haverford School) struck out two batters in one inning of work in the 10th to close out the game and earn the save.
Georgetown started freshman pitcher Charles Steinman (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade), who went 4.2 innings, allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits, with one walk and two strikeouts.
The Hoyas had taken an early lead with two runs in the first. Lee hit a leadoff single and moved to third on a double from sophomore designated hitter Rand Ravnaas (Fort Worth, Texas/All Saints Episcopal). Senior shortstop Tom Elliott (Blue Bell, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) reached on an error, allowing Lee to score and Capeless was issued a bases loaded walk to score Ravnaas.
Mason tied the game, 2-2, in the fourth, but the Hoyas scored two runs in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead. Runners were on second and third after Lamont was hit by a pitch and Capeless doubled. Senior second baseman Chip Malt (Boston, Mass./Buckingham, Browne & Nichols) drove in a run with a single, putting runners on the corners, and a fielder's choice from freshman Justin Leeson (Exton, Pa./West Chester) brought in Capeless.

In the first game, Blakey picked a good time for his first collegiate hit and first collegiate RBI. Mason had taken a 4-3 lead with two runs in the top of the seventh, but the Hoyas sent the game to an extra frame with a run in the bottom of the inning. In the eighth, Cupelo was issued a leadoff walk and pinch-runner Leeson stole second. With one out, Blakey singled and scored Leeson to give the Hoyas the 5-4 win.
Junior pitcher Pablo Vinent (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit), who gave up two runs in the seventh, threw two innings and struck out one batter to pick up the win. Senior Tim Adleman (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) started and went six innings, giving up two runs on nine hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.
The Hoyas had taken a 1-0 lead in the second when Capeless hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded after singles from Fernandez, Lamont and Cupelo. A two-run fifth inning gave Georgetown a 3-2 lead. Ravnaas hit a lead-off home run to start the inning and a sacrifice fly from Elliott scored Lee, who singled and moved to third after sophomore Andy Lentz (Farmington Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) reached on an error.
Georgetown sophomore starter Will Harris (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) will start the final game of the series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
