Final Stats
FRESNO, Calif - Samantha Peters (Suwanee, Ga./Collins Hill) hit her second home run of the season during a five run fifth inning rally for the Georgetown University softball team (6¬-10), but it was not enough, as Mississippi State score the game-winning run in the seventh to defeat the Hoyas 7-6 on Saturday afternoon at the Bayer Cropscience Classic.
Peters went 1-for-4 with three RBI's and a home run, while Jordan Hansen (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the loss.
The Bulldogs struck in the top of the first inning when Casey Bramlett came around to score on Ka'ili Smith's triple, taking a 1-0 lead.
Georgetown tied the score in the bottom of the second inning when Hansen doubled to right centerfield to drive in Demetria Cipriano (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter). The score would remain tied until the top of the fourth inning, as the Bulldogs loaded the bases for Smith, who hit a grand slam over the center field fence to take a 5-1 lead. Mississippi State put another run on the board in the top of the fifth inning to expand the lead to five.
The Hoyas responded in the bottom of the fifth, as Hansen set the table with a one-out single. Cara Savarese (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) reached base on an error and McKinley Cooper (McLean, Va./Langley) singled to centerfield to drive in a run. Peters followed with a three-run home run over the centerfield fence, her second in as many days, to close the gap to one runs, 6-5. Later in the inning, Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) singled to drive in a run to tie the score at six.
Erin Nesbit broke the tie in the top of the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, allowing Jessica Cooley to score the go ahead run. Mississippi State retired GU in order in the bottom of the seventh to drop the Hoyas, 7-6.
Carter took the loss, allowing seven runs, three earned, on nine hits over 7.0 innings pitched. Carter struck out five and walked six.
