Final Stats
STORRS, Conn. - The Georgetown University softball team (10-15, 2-0 BIG EAST) scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) pitched the last 2.2 innings to earn a victory, as the Hoyas defeated UConn (7-16, 0-2 BIG EAST) 8-5 to take both halves of their Saturday doubleheader.
Carter went 2-for-3 with three RBI's at the plate, and allowed three runs on five hits over 2.2 innings to take the win on the mound for Georgetown. Demetria Cipriano (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter) and Cara Savarese (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) each went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for GU's offense.
The victory is the Hoyas' fourth straight over Connecticut, the alma mater of Georgetown Head Coach Pat Conlan.
The Hoyas and Huskies played scoreless ball through three innings, until Georgetown's offense awoke in the fourth. Cipriano led off the fourth inning with a single and McKinley Cooper and Samantha Peters drew two-out walks to load the bases. Kelsie Hanson walked to allow Cipriano to score, before Carter singled to drive in two runs, giving GU a 3-0 lead.
Amy DeLuca led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run, to put the Huskies on the board. UConn would score a run in each the fifth and sixth inning to tie the score at three.
Georgetown's offense would go to work once again, as Carter doubled to drive in Hanson. Cipriano and Cara Savarese each drove in a run with singles before Cooper singled through the right side of the infield to drive in two more, giving Georgetown an 8-3 lead.
The Huskies would score twice in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Carter would induce a pop up to herself to record the final out, stranding two baserunners to seal the Hoyas 8-5 win, their second of the day.
Georgetown and UConn will meet to conclude their three game series on Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
