WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's rowing team opened its spring season at the Class of 2006 Cup on the Potomac River on Saturday morning, as University of North Carolina captured the cup for the second consecutive year.
The Hoyas earned victories in the Novice Four, Novice Eight and Second Varsity Eight races, but the Tar Heels defeated the Blue and Gray in the First Varsity Eight race by six seconds, and the Varsity Four race by two seconds.
Racing began at 9 a.m. as the Hoyas Varsity Four crew finished in 8:05.9, just over two seconds behind UNC's time of 8:03.4.
GU's Novice Four boat defeated UNC, finishing in a time of 7:46.6.
Georgetown's lightweight second varsity eight defeated UNC's novice eight by close to eight seconds.
The Hoyas first varsity eight finished just under six seconds behind North Carolina in a time of 7:06.0.
Georgetown's second varsity eight concluded the morning of races, defeating UNC by approximately 11 seconds in a time of 7:13.5.
