Tommy Lee led off the first inning with a triple to left field and came in to score on Billy Cupelo's sacrifice fly to deep center field for the first score of the game. Rand Ravnaas, who had earlier reached base on a dropped infield fly ball, would score on Erick Fernandez's single, giving the Hoyas a 2-0 edge after the first inning.
The Scarlet Knights would explode for five runs in the top of the third inning, pounding out seven hits, while bringing 10 batters to the plate. Jayson Hernandez would cap Rutgers' third inning with a two-run single to take a 5-2 lead.
Georgetown cut the lead to two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Fernandez hit a two out double to the gap in left centerfield and came around to score on Sean Lamont's double to the gap in right centerfield.
Two Hoyas errors allowed the Scarlet Knights to extend the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Pat Biserta and Steve Nyisztor each scored following Georgetown errors, taking a 7-3 lead.
GU threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Rand Ravnaas singled to right field to drive in Tom Elliott to cut the lead to three runs. The Hoyas would then load the bases with two outs, but Rutgers' Jerry Elsing came on to record a strikeout, ending the threat.
The Hoyas would load the bases again in the eighth inning, as Sean Lamont would cross the plate on Tommy Lee's fielder's choice, but it was all the damage GU could manage, closing the gap to 7-5, the eventual final score.
Georgetown and Rutgers will conclude their three-game series on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. at Shirley Povich Field.
