BETHESDA, Md. - The Georgetown University baseball team fell to the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish (9-16, 1-4 BIG EAST) Friday afternoon after allowing nine runs in the first two innings of the game at Shirley Povich Field. The Hoyas battled back to make a game of it, but couldn't overcome the early deficit to fall 12-8. With the loss, Georgetown drops to 13-12 on the season and 1-4 in BIG EAST play.
Notre Dame opened the game with a solo homer and followed that up as Bill Warrender drove in a pair of runs to make it 3-0 in the first. The Irish managed five hits in the second including a three-run homer by Mick Doyle as the squad continued to build a lead.
The Georgetown defense held strong in the top of the third striking out two and allowing just one hit, but it was up to the bats to get going in order to get back in the game.
Tommy Lee's (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac/Winthrop) homer over the left field fence got the Hoyas on the board, but the Blue & Gray had a long way to go for a comeback.
Back-to-back hits by Chip Malt (Boston, Mass./Buckingham Browne & Nichols) and Tom Elliott (Blue Bell, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) put runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Lee came in at the top of the order and popped one over the third baseman's head to drive in a pair of runs making the score 9-3.
Notre Dame answered with three runs in the top of the sixth, but in the bottom of the inning Erick Fernandez (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah) hit a long ball to right center to drive in a run and spark a rally. Looking at full count and two outs, Malt lined one into left field to bring two runners home. That would be the end of the rally as GU closed in on Notre Dame 12-6.
The Irish went three and out in the top of the seventh and Lee opened the bottom of the inning with a hit for the Hoyas. Dan Capeless (Centreville, Mass./Boston College High School) drove him in with a single in the gap.
In the top of the ninth, the Georgetown defense forced the Irish into three quick outs. Leading off, Rand Ravnaas (Fort Worth, Texas/All Saints Episcopal) sent one over the right field fence and the Hoyas looked as if they were poised for a comeback. Unfortunately, the rally would be short lived as the Blue & Gray fell 12-8.
The Hoyas had 11 hits and eight RBI, but also committed five errors. Notre Dame managed 14 hits with 11 RBI. Lee went 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs and three RBI while Malt went 2-for-3 with one run and two RBI to his credit. Tim Adleman (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) took the loss on the mound with five strikeouts and just two walks.
Georgetown will close out the series with Notre Dame on Saturday. The first pitch is scheduled for noon at Shirley Povich Field. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
