Blakey, Kirby Help Lead Hoyas Past Delaware State, 12-1

April 21, 2010

Box Score

BETHESDA, Md. - Freshman second baseman Corbin Blakey (Alpharetta, Ga./Centennial) drove in four runs and sophomore pitcher Bobby Kirby (Bel Air, Md./Loyola Blakefield) gave up one unearned run over five innings as Georgetown beat Delaware State, 10-1, at Shirley Povich Field on a gray and drizzly Tuesday afternoon.

The win improves Georgetown's record to 19-18 overall, while Delaware State falls to 11-20.

Kirby threw 5.0 innings and gave up one run, an earned score by the Hornets in the top of the fourth, on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts as he improved to 4-0 this season.

Leading 4-0 in the second, the Hoyas pushed the lead to 7-0 using the long ball. Junior third baseman Sean Lamont (Houston, Texas/Bellaire) reached on a fielder's choice with one out and was brought home when junior catcher junior catcher Erick Fernandez (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah) blasted a home run over the fence in left, making it 6-0. One pitch later, the lead was up to seven runs when sophomore catcher Kevin Johnson (Peabody, Mass./Belmont Hill) hit a shot to left that went out just near the foul line.

The Hoyas had jumped on top in the second inning with four runs. Junior first baseman Dan Capeless (Centerville, Mass./Boston College H.S.) reached on an error and Lamont was hit by a pitch to put the first two batters on base. Capeless stole third and scored on a throwing error, which allowed Lamont to advance. Walks to Fernandez and Johnson from Delaware State Shane Foreman loaded the bases for Blakey, who delivered a two-run single to center, putting Georgetown on the board. Freshman Justin Leeson (Exton, Pa./West Chester) brought in Fernandez with a single to left, making it 4-0.

Kirby got into trouble in the first inning after issuing a one-out walk to Keith Hernandez and giving up a double to Abe Eubank, but he retired the final two batters to get out of the inning. He retired the side in the second inning and gave up a leadoff single in the third, but senior shortstop Tommy Elliott (Blue Bell, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) helped to get out of that with a double play. Kirby gave up hits in the next two innings, but allowed only one unearned run - a run-scoring double from Warren Stimpson bringing home Eubank, who had reached on an error - before giving way to the bullpen.

Freshman Tommy Polus (Crowne Point, Ind./Andrean) threw two scoreless innings with three strikeouts, while freshman James Heine (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) and senior Cary Piligian (Troy, Mich./Detroit Jesuit) pitched the final two innings.

The Hoyas added three more runs in the fifth, with Blakey, Leeson and senior center fielder Tommy Lee (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) each driving in a run. Fernandez hit a leadoff single and was on second after Johnson was by a pitch. A single to center from Blakey brought home Fernandez and both runners moved up a bag after a wild pitch. A ground out from Leeson scored Johnson and Lee's sacrifice fly to center brought home Blakey, making it 10-1.

In the eighth, sophomore Dan Godefroi (Andover, Mass./Andover) reached on an error and scored when sophomore Nick Geary (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) singled to center. After Johnson was hit by a pitch, Blakey's single to center brought home Geary with Georgetown's final run.

The Hoyas scored 12 runs on 11 hits, with the bottom four batters in the lineup finishing the day 9-for-15 with 10 RBI and eight runs scored. Blakey finished the day 3-for-5 with one run scored and four RBI to lead the offensive attack, while Fernandez was 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two RBI and Geary was 2-for-2 with one run and one RBI. Johnson finished 1-for-2 with a single, a walk, was hit by two pitches, scored three runs and drove in one.

Georgetown returns to BIG EAST play this weekend, visiting St. John's for a three-game series in Queens, N.Y., beginning on Friday, April 23. First pitch at the Ballpark at St. John's is slated for 6 p.m.
