WASHINGTON - Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) tossed 7.0 innings of two-hit shut-out ball, striking out two, as the Georgetown University softball team (17-26, 6-9 BIG EAST) defeated Rutgers (17-29, 4-10 BIG EAST), 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon in game one of a doubleheader at Guy Mason Field.
McKinley Cooper (McLean, Va./Langley) drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning, a single through the left side that scored Demetria Cipriano (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter)
Carter kept the Scarlet Knights off the base paths, allowing just four base runners all game and the Hoyas scored a run in the sixth inning to halt a five-game conference losing streak.
Carter and Rutgers' Nicole Lindley moved the game at a brisk pace, holding the game scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning. Cipriano drew a lead-off walk and then beat the throw to second base on Shikara Lowe's bunt single. Cara Savarese would bunt both runner's up a base, before McKinley Cooper's single through the left side broke the scoreless tie, driving in Cipriano to give GU a 1-0 lead.
Carter held the Scarlet Knights scoreless in the top of the seventh to preserve the victory.
