WASHINGTON - Junior pitchers Tommy Isaacs (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Bolles) and Pablo Vinent (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit) combined to throw a six-hitter and Georgetown used a four-run fourth inning to lift the Georgetown baseball team to a 7-3 win over Villanova at the Ballpark at Plymouth Meeting Saturday afternoon.
The win improves Georgetown to 20-23 overall and 3-14 in the BIG EAST and ends a 10-game conference losing streak for the Hoyas, who had dropped six of those games by one run. Villanova falls to 24-17 overall and 4-13 in the league.
Isaacs threw 5.2 innings and allowed only three runs (one earned) on five hits, with four walks and four strikeouts as he improved to 1-5 this season. Vinent came on in the sixth inning and proceeded to allow only one hit with one strikeout in 3.1 innings as he earned his second save of the season.
Georgetown took a 1-0 lead in the first when senior center fielder Tommy Lee (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a ground out and scored when junior catcher Erick Fernandez (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah) grounded out to second.
Villanova, which won the opening game of the series on Friday night 6-5 with a ninth inning hit, jumped out to a 2-1 lead with a pair of unearned runs in the second inning, but the Hoyas responded in the fourth. Fernandez and junior first baseman Dan Capeless (Centreville, Mass./Boston College H.S.) reached base on singles, but a throwing error allowed Fernandez to score, tying the game. A single from junior third baseman Sean Lamont (Houston, Texas/Bellaire) loaded the bases and sophomore Kevin Johnson (Peabody, Mass./Belmont Hill) brought in the go-ahead run with a single up the middle. Senior second baseman Chip Malt (Boston, Mass./Buckingham, Browne & Nicholas),then reached base on a fielder's choice to bring in two runs and senior shortstop Tom Elliott (Blue Bell, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) hit a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2.
Villanova narrowed the gap to 5-3, but Elliott hit a double down the left field line, bringing in Malt, who had singled, pushing the GU lead to 6-3. The Hoyas added an insurance run in the ninth when Lee hit his second double of the game and scored on a single from senior left fielder Billy Cupelo (Franklin, Mass./Bishop Feehan).
Lee finished the day 2-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored, Elliott drove in a pair of runs and hit a double, Johnson went 2-for-2 with a run scored and one RBI, while Fernandez finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Georgetown closes out the series with Villanova on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 12;15 p.m.
