Sophomore goalkeeper Briana Pereira (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) and sophomore forward Catherine Shugrue (Devon, Pa./Episcopal Academy) earned spots on this week's BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after leading the Hoyas to a 2-0 start with victories over Bryant University and St. Francis University (Pa.). The honors were announced Monday afternoon by the conference office.
Pereira had six saves and allowed one goal over both victories, as well as recording her first career shutout against St. Francis (Pa.) in a 4-0 win on Sunday. It was the first shutout recorded since Deirdre Crovo beat Brown in 2007. Pereira becomes the first Georgetown defensive player or goalkeeper to earn BIG EAST weekly honors.
"Kat (Assistant Coach Kathryn Masson) had me write three goals before the game. One, effective communication, two, focus on basics defending corners, and three, get a shutout. It felt good to get the shutout." Pereira said.
Shugrue scored three goals and had an assist in the season opener against Bryant sealing Georgetown's first home opening victory since 2003. Shugrue is the first Hoya to score a hat trick since Kristen Volpe accomplished the feat against Lock Haven last season on August 29.
"I did not score any goals last season. It was a nice way to start off the season." Shugrue said.
Louisville's Nicole Youman was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, while Syracuse's Iona Hollowasy was named Defensive Player of the Week. Allison Angulo (Connecticut), Leonie Greyer (Syracuse), and Sarah Mansfield (Connecticut) rounded out the weekly honor roll.
Georgetown will host La Salle on Saturday September 4 at the William I. Jacobs Recreational Complex at 1 p.m. on the campus of American University. The Hoyas will also host Temple on Sunday at 1 p.m.
