PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The No. 18/17 Georgetown women's basketball squad held on to win a close one, 49-45, over the Providence College Friars (8-8, 1-3 BIG EAST) Saturday evening in Rhode Island. Senior Monica McNutt had a big day to lead the Hoyas with 17 points and 11 rebounds scoring her 1,000th-career point along with notching her first-career double-double. With the win Georgetown improves to 14-4 overall and 2-2 in BIG EAST play.
Sloppy play and a shooting drought down the stretched plagued the Hoyas who scored just eight points in the final 10 minutes of the contest. In the closing seconds, the Friars had opportunities to tie it up, but the Georgetown defense stood strong to get the 49-45 victory.
At 16:38 in the second half, McNutt hit a three from the right corner to score her 1,000th-career point and put the Hoyas up by 11, 32-21. McNutt is the 21st player in Georgetown history to reach this milestone. The last Georgetown player to reach 1,000 was Kieraah Marlow who had 1,602-career points and graduated in 2008. Marlow is fourth on the all-time scoring list.
Providence jumped out to a small lead in the first half, due in part to careless GU turnovers. The Hoyas, however, answered with a 7-0 run to increase the lead to eight thanks to seven-consecutive points from McNutt. Georgetown went ahead by 10 on a late layup from junior Rubylee Wright (Latta, S.C./Latta) and went into the break leading 27-19.
McNutt led all scorers with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore Sydney Wilson (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College Prep) added seven points and four rebounds. The Hoyas outrebounded the Friars, 43-37, and held Providence to 28.6 percent shooting from the field.
The Blue & Gray will continue BIG EAST play on Tuesday as the squad travels to South Bend, Ind., for a 7 p.m., contest against the No. 12/12 University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com and the game will be televised live on CBS College Sports.
