WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team jumped out to an early lead, but was unable to hold on, losing a close game to the Michigan State Spartans, 3-1, at the Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) Tournament on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Hannah Slovacek (Austin, Texas/Westlake) made her first career start in the circle for the Hoyas, pitching six innings and giving up only four hits and two earned runs.
Junior Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) led off the game with a double, smacking the offering from Lauren Kramer into right center field to put herself in scoring position. Three batters later freshman Jenna Stark (Huntington Beach, Calif./Orange Lutheran) gave the Hoyas the lead, singling to left center and driving in Carter.
Michigan State tied the game in the bottom of the second, but was unable to add more than one run as Slovacek left the bases loaded, inducing Jessica Bracamonte into a groundout to end the threat.
The Spartans would add two more runs in the fourth inning to go up 3-1 and neither team would score the rest of the way.
The Hoyas wrap up the season-opening tournament with a game against Saint Louis tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
