Georgetown Closes Out FGCU Tournament with 7-5 Loss

Feb. 20, 2011

Box Score

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team played Saint Louis University for the second consecutive day, but was unable to repeat its winning performance from Saturday, falling to the Billikens, 7-5, on the final day of the Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) Tournament in Fort Myers, Fla.

Freshman shortstop Alexandria Anttila (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored and junior first baseman Cara Savarese (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) added two hits of her own in a back-and-forth game that was the Hoyas' (1-4) best offensive performance of the year to date.

Junior Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) started at pitcher for the Blue & Gray, lasting 5.1 innings and giving up two earned runs. Her fourth inning single through the left side of the infield was Georgetown's only other hit in the contest and gave Carter a hit in four of the five games this weekend.

The Hoyas pushed across a run in the first inning after Saint Louis hurler Kelcie Matesa walked four consecutive batters to score Anttila from third. The Billikens immediately tied the game at 1-1 in their half of the first and took the lead in the third after scoring three more to go up 4-2.

A leadoff single by Savarese in the fourth inning sparked the team's best rally of the day. Freshman Elyse Graziano (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) reached on an error by the second baseman and Carter singled to load the bases. Anttila then pulled a single through the left side to score two and tie the game, 4-4.

Saint Louis took the lead for good in the fifth inning, scoring twice to put the game out of reach. Anttila launched a triple in the sixth and scored the Hoyas' last run on a groundout by sophomore Shikara Lowe (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit).

"I was very happy with our energy this weekend," Head Coach Pat Conlan said. "We had great presence on the field and at the plate. We have plenty of things to work on, however overall I thought we had a positive weekend. We will get back to work on Tuesday and prepare for next weekend's tournament at North Carolina."

Georgetown returns to action next weekend at the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C. The team opens the tournament with a doubleheader against Saint Joseph's and the host Tar Heels on Friday and will play Penn State on Saturday and North Carolina State on Sunday.
