CAMDEN, N.J. - The Georgetown University men's crew opened its 2011 spring campaign with a triumphant return to the 13th Annual Jesuit Invitational on Saturday. In the premiere event of the day, the men's varsity eight, GU won the race on the Cooper River in a time of 6:16, in front of St. Joseph's University who finished in 6:28 and Boston College in 6:48. The winning varsity eight crew included: stroke Matt Stewart, Henry Hoffstot, Sam Viola, Michael Hennessy, Kyle Textor, Tim Broughton, Ben Holtzmuller, bow Mike Blommer and coxswain Carly Heitlinger.
Georgetown's second varsity eight also finished first in their event, winning by open water over St. Joe's in a time of 6:29.5. They raced in the following line-up: stroke Chris Kozak, Matt Funk, Greg Charte, Cameron Hoerner, Colin MacDougall, Matthew Matyjek, Matthew Mullman, bow Adam Orshefsky and coxswain Nathaniel Liu. The first freshman men's eight also posted a strong win on the Cooper River on Saturday. Their eight was comprised of stroke Charles Rice, James Nelson, William Schnoor, John Collins, John Absher, William Knox, Jake Rosen, bow Chris Sparacino and coxswain Jake Appelof. They finished with more than a length of open water separating them from their closest competitor, Boston College.
In the second freshman eight race, GU's line-up of stroke Conner Tweardy, Steven Lim, Peter Botz, Gregory Smyth, Connor Kreeft, Greg Accarino, Christopher Berlin, bow Ryan Cunningham and coxswain Courtney Mastrangelo raced against Boston College. After falling a length down at the start, Georgetown fought hard to walk back a few seats but at the end of this closely contested race they were unable to pass BC.
Georgetown also competed in the varsity four and freshman four events. The V4+ boat of stroke Chris Kozak, Matt Funk, Greg Charte, Cameron Hoerner and coxswain Kerri McKie placed 3rd of 5 crews in a time of 7:11 trailing BC, and winner Loyola. The GU F4+ of stroke Conner Tweardy, Greg Smyth, Peter Botz, Steven Lim and coxswain Stephanie Hom finished second to St. Joe's in thier race.
Georgetown men's crew returns to racing April 2nd when they meet Princeton and Syracuse on Lake Carnegie in Princeton, NJ.
