WASHINGTON - For the second-straight game, Georgetown out-hit its opponent and the Hoyas put runners in scoring position in four of the first six innings, but it wasn't enough as Notre Dame held on for a 1-0 win in a BIG EAST baseball game at Frank Eck Stadium in South Bend, Ind.
It was the second-straight loss for the Hoyas, who fall to 15-9 overall and 0-2 in the BIG EAST, while Notre Dame improves to 9-10-1 overall and 2-0 in the league.
Sophomore Charles Steinman (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade) took the loss for the Hoyas, falling to 1-2 this season. He went 4.0 innings and gave up one run on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
Notre Dame scored the game's only run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Steinman gave up a two-out single to left from Mick Doyle, plating Greg Sherry with the decisive score. Sherry had been issued a one-out walk and moved to second on a ground out from Frank DeSico.
That was all Notre Dame would get, as three Hoya relievers kept the Irish at bay. Senior pitcher Tommy Isaacs (Ponte Vedre Beach, Fla./Bolles) loaded the bases with one out in the fifth, but induced a double play started by senior third baseman Sean Lamont (Fort Worth, Texas/All Saints' Episcopal) to end the threat.
Junior Billy Cosmopulos (Seekonk, Mass./Moses Brown) threw 2.0 innings of shutout ball, walking three batters and striking out one, before giving way to senior Pablo Vinent (Hialeah, Fla./Belen Jesuit), who worked a scoreless eighth inning.
Notre Dame starter Cole Johnson, meanwhile, threw 8.0 innings and gave up no runs on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts as he improved to 2-4. Dan Slania retired the side in order in the ninth for his second save.
The Hoyas had chances against Johnson in the early goings, putting runners on base in four of the first six innings, but could not plate a run.
In the first inning, junior right fielder Rand Ravnaas (Fort Worth, Texas/All Saints' Episcopal) hit a two-out double and senior catcher Erick Fernandez (Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah) walked, but Johnson struck out the final batter of the inning to end the threat. Junior second baseman Andy Lentz (Farmington Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) reached second on an error with two out in the second. In the third, sophomore shortstop Mike Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Douglas MacArthur) hit a one-out single and Fernandez singled with two outs and the runners were on second and third after a steal, but the threat stopped there. One of the team's best chances came in the sixth when senior first baseman Dan Capeless (Centreville, Mass./Boston College HS) singled and moved to third on an error with one out, but the team could not plate the tying run.
The teams close out their three-game series on Sunday, March 27. First pitch at Frank Eck Stadium is slated for 1:05 p.m. (ET). Freshman Alex Baker (Charlotte, N.C./Ardrey Kell), who will start for Georgetown, is 3-1 with a 5.68 earned run average.
