No. 20 Georgetown Hosts No. 13 Syracuse on Saturday

April 15, 2011

WASHINGTON - The No. 20 Georgetown University women's lacrosse team (6-5, 4-0 BIG EAST) will take on the Syracuse University Orange on Saturday, as it looks to build on its 4-2 home mark at Multi-Sport Field. This game is the last of a four game home stand and will be televised live on CBS College Sports.

The Blue & Gray defeated both the University of Cincinnati and the University of Louisville last weekend, with a dominating 17-2 win over Cincinnati and a closer 19-12 victory over the Cardinals. Senior captain Jordy Kirr (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School) totaled four goals and five assists in last week's contest, en route to being named BIG EAST Player of the Week. In the Hoyas' victory over Cincinnati, 13 members of the squad pitched in to score the team's 17 goals, with seniors Kirr and Kathleen Dwyer (Winnetka, Ill./Loyola Academy) each totaling two goals in the contest.

Georgetown's offense is led by Kirr, who has 41 points on 19 goals and 22 assists this season. Sophomore Sophia Thomas (Lutherville, Md./Maryvale Prep) leads the team with 27 goals, and has 35 points this season. Jacqueline Giles (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) and Dina Jackson (Potomac, Md./Bullis) are tied with 16 goals each, with Giles has totaled 19 points to Jackson's 17. Thomas leads the team with 21 draw controls and 25 ground balls.

The Hoyas went 2-1 against Syracuse last season, beating them in the regular season, 10-9, and in the BIG EAST Tournament, 13-11. The Orange ended Georgetown's NCAA Tournament run last year, with a 15-8 victory over the Hoyas in Washington, D.C. All-time, Georgetown is 13-4 against Syracuse, 11-1 in the regular season and 7-1 at home. The squads have played two overtime games in their 17-contest series.

The Orange are 5-6 overall this season, with a 3-0 mark in the BIG EAST. They have not beaten a ranked opponent yet this year and are 2-5 on the road. Syracuse's offense is led by freshman Katie Webster, who is first on the team with 24 goals, senior Tee Ladouceur with 21 goals, and sophomore Michelle Tumolo as well as junior Sarah Holden, who have each tallied 17 goals thus far. Syracuse is riding a two-game win streak coming into Saturday's match, having beaten Connecticut and Notre Dame last weekend.

On Saturday, the 2001 Georgetown women's lacrosse team will be honored at halftime for the 10-year anniversary of its trip to the NCAA National Championship game. Saturday is also Junior Hoya Day.

Despite the forecast of inclement weather, the game will be played rain or shine. The opening draw is scheduled for noon at Multi-Sport Field. The game will be broadcast live on CBS College Sports, with Jason Knapp doing the play-by-play and GU alum Sheehan Stanwick Burch as the color analyst. Live stats and audio-only webcast featuring Chuck Timanus will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
