WASHINGTON - The No. 16 Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad dropped its first conference game of the season on Saturday as the Hoyas fell, 13-10, to the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish (7-8, 4-2 BIG EAST). The Blue & Gray staged a huge comeback in the second half, but couldn't pull out the victory to drop to 8-6 overall and 6-1 in BIG EAST play.
After trailing by as much as seven goals in the second half, the Hoyas staged a 5-0 run pulling within two at 8:42. Georgetown had three opportunities in the final minutes, but all were saved as the Blue & Gray continued to gain possession but couldn't find the back of the cage.
Sophomore Sophia Thomas (Lutherville, Md./Maryvale Prep) started the run at 21:16 and classmate Kelsi Bozel (Hunt Valley, Md./Notre Dame Prep) quickly added another. Senior captain Jordy Kirr (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School) then hit a score at 17:16 before Thomas tallied her second of the game. Georgetown cut it to two with a goal from freshman Kelyn Freedman (Newtown Square, Pa./Radnor) at 8:42.
Georgetown had a number of opportunities, but just couldn't connect as the Irish shot into the open net on the other end. Thomas hit a free position shot to once again pull within two with just under two minutes remaining.
The Hoya defense was forced to come out and UND scored once more making the final 13-10.
The Blue & Gray jumped out to a one-goal lead early in the game as Freedman had an unassisted goal and sophomore Dina Jackson (Potomac, Md./Bullis) connected with Kirr making it 2-1 at 18:06.
That would be the only good news of the half, however, as the Irish rattled off a 6-0 run to take a five-goal lead. Georgetown finished the half with free position goals by Bozel and freshman Hannah Franklin (Phoenix, Md./McDonogh School) to cut it to a more manageable 7-4 score at the break.
Thomas and Kirr led the Blue & Gray with three points each. Thomas managed a hat trick and Kirr notched a goal and two assists. GU outshot the Irish, 34-27, and had more ground balls (20-15) as well as draw controls (13-12) and fewer turnovers (19-13). Shooting percentage made the difference as the Hoyas shot 42 percent and Notre Dame connected on 62 percent of its shots on goal.
Freshman Barb Black (Ruxton, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) took the loss in the cage with eight saves, while Ellie Hilling managed 14 stops for Notre Dame.
