WASHINGTON - On a day marred by thunderstorms in central New York, the Georgetown University softball team lost a 9-0 contest on the road against Syracuse on Tuesday afternoon. Game two of the doubleheader was canceled in the bottom of the second inning due to the inclement weather.
The loss drops the Hoyas' BIG EAST record to 5-9 and 12-37 overall.
GU had one of its best chances to get on the board in the top of the first when it loaded the bases without the benefit of a hit. Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) walked to lead off the game and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Regan Page (Atlanta, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian).
A free pass issued to Shikara Lowe (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) and Cara Savarese (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) subsequently getting hit by a pitch filled the basepaths with Hoyas, but Syracuse hurler Jenna Caira settled down to retire the side and would buckle down the rest of the game.
Georgetown would not threaten again until the fifth inning when Kristi Preuss (LaPlata, Md./LaPlata) led off the frame with a triple to right field, her first of the season. Callie Eward (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) came in as a pinch hitter to try and get the run home and muscled a ball to the Syracuse shortstop, who quickly threw to her catcher to cut Preuss down at the plate and preserve the shutout.
Eward would steal second base to move herself into scoring position, but would get no further, and Syracuse would tack on a couple of runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend its lead and end the game.
The Blue & Gray will play its final road series of the season this weekend when it travels to Providence to take on the Friars. A doubleheader on Saturday is scheduled to begin at noon while the rubber match will take place at the same time on Sunday.
