Softball Drops Close Contest to Villanova, 7-6

April 3, 2011

Box Score

WASHINGTON - Senior Jillian Webb (Hemet, Calif./Hemet) hit a three-run home run and junior Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) was 3-for-3, but the Georgetown University softball team was unable to hold on to an early lead, losing the last contest of a three-game set, 7-6, to Villanova on Sunday afternoon.

With the loss, the Hoyas' record now stands at 9-26 on the season, including a 3-2 mark in BIG EAST play.

Georgetown's offense picked up right where it left off after yesterday's doubleheader sweep, scoring four times in the first inning. Carter led off the game with a walk and was moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Alexandria Anttila (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community). It was Anttila's 12th sacrifice hit of the year, which leads the BIG EAST.

With Carter on second base, sophomore Shikara Lowe (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) singled through the right side to put runners on the corners with one out. Freshman Jenna Stark (Huntington Beach, Calif./Orange Lutheran) then smacked a ball to left field, reaching base safely on an error by the defense, advancing Lowe to second and scoring Carter to put GU on top, 1-0.

Webb would extend the lead when she launched her first home run of the season over the right center field wall to score three and put the Hoyas up, 4-0. The long ball makes Webb the eighth Hoya to go long this season.

The Blue & Gray's pitching and defense threw up zeroes in the first couple of frames, but Villanova got on the board with three runs in the third and a pair of Hoya defensive miscues helped the Wildcats score four times in the fourth to take a 7-4 lead.

Georgetown mounted a late charge in the top of the seventh when sophomore Callie Eward (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) singled and scored on a double by Carter. Anttila moved Carter to third on a single to left field and then the Hoyas' leadoff batter displayed her prowess on the basepaths, stealing home to pull her squad to within one, 7-6.

With the game tightening, Wildcat hurler Molly Manning shut the door, inducing a fly ball to record the final out and the victory.

In addition to Carter's 3-for-3 effort, Lowe went 2-for-4 as the Hoyas had their best trio of offensive efforts this season, batting .330 in the series (29-for-88).

Georgetown will attempt to keep the bats going when they take on UMBC at home on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch at Guy Mason Field is scheduled for 2 p.m.
