WASHINGTON - Jenna Stark (Huntington Beach, Calif./Orange Lutheran) and Jillian Webb (Hemet, Calif./Hemet) each hit home runs and Kristi Preuss (LaPlata, Md./LaPlata) went 4-for-6 on the afternoon, but the Georgetown University softball team lost both games of a doubleheader against Providence on Saturday. The Hoyas fell in the opener, 3-1, and dropped the second contest by a 5-2 score.
Following the games, Georgetown's record now stands at 12-39 with a 5-11 mark in BIG EAST play.
Providence jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game one with a trio of runs in the first two innings. GU inched closer in the fourth when Stark launched a solo home run over the right field wall, her third of the season, to make the score 3-1. That line would stand, as Georgetown put two more runners on the sixth, but was unable to push anyone across.
In game two, the Friars again took a 3-0 lead until the Hoyas pulled to within one with a pair of runs in the sixth inning. After Stark reached on an error by the third baseman, senior Jillian Webb hit her second home run of the season to right field to make the score 3-2. Providence would add two more in the bottom of the inning and would claim the victory by a 5-2 final.
Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) and Melissa Conners (Wellington, Fla./Wellington) both pitched complete games for Georgetown, striking out a combined 10 batters on the day.
Kristi Preuss had four hits in the doubleheader, including a 3-for-3 effort in game one.
The rubber match in the series begins tomorrow at noon.
