WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team closed out the 2011 season with an 8-1 loss against the Louisville Cardinals at Guy Mason Field on Wednesday afternoon. A doubleheader originally scheduled to begin at noon was delayed for two hours and shortened to a single game because of a consistent morning rain and time restrictions.
Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) started in the circle for GU (13-40, 6-12 BIG EAST) and allowed only two earned runs in 5.1 innings of work, striking out three. After surrendering a leadoff double in the top of the first, Carter retired the next three batters to end the threat. The Cardinals would only be blanked in one other frame as they scattered 13 hits and scored eight total runs, pressuring the Hoyas into four errors on defense,
After falling behind 3-0, Georgetown got on the board in the bottom of the third when Carter (2-for-2) doubled down the left field line, missing a home run by mere inches. Elyse Graziano (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) came into run for Carter and advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when Regan Page (Atlanta, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian) singled into left field, her line drive narrowly missing the outstretched glove of Louisville's diving shortstop.
With two away, Jenna Stark (Huntington Beach, Calif./Orange Lutheran) reached on a fielder's choice and Page was safe at second when the second baseman had trouble handling the toss from her shortstop for the attempted force play, but Tori Collins retired the side and stranded the pair of Hoya runners.
Georgetown also had an opportunity to close the gap in the fifth. Carter singled up the middle to start things off and eventually made her way around to third base on a groundout to third and a fly out to right field, but remained 60 feet from home plate when the third out was recorded.
Up 4-1 following five innings, Louisville added two runs in each the sixth and the seventh to make the final score 8-1.
Hannah Slovacek (Austin, Texas/Westlake) tossed the last 1.2 innings in relief for GU, allowing two runs on three hits.
