Georgetown Falls in BIG EAST Semifinal

May 5, 2011

Box Score

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad lost in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament, 15-12, Thursday evening at Multi-Sport Field. The fourth-seeded University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10-8) were too much in the second half for the top-seeded Hoyas who sit at 9-8 overall.

The Blue & Gray started the game on a 4-1 run spanning the first nine minutes. Senior attacker Kathleen Dwyer (Winnetka, Ill./Loyola Academy) started strong and despite UND's retort, freshman midfielder Hannah Franklin (Phoenix, Md./McDonogh School), senior attacker Jordy Kirr (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School) and sophomore attacker (Potomac, Md./Bullis) all found the back of the cage.

The Irish made it 4-2, but senior midfielder Mary Beth Brophy (Berwyn, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) put the lead back at two with a score at 17:45.

A 3-1 Notre Dame run gave the Blue & Gray a one-goal advantage at 15:23, and the Hoyas built upon the lead to go ahead by three for the second time that evening as senior attacker Mary Wittelsberger (Parkton, Md./Hereford) and Brophy both tallied a goal.

That would be the end of GU's good fortune, however, as the Irish came back with a vengeance going on a 5-0 run to close out the half spanning the final 13 minutes making it 10-8 Notre Dame at the break.

The Blue & Gray tied it back up to open the second when Dwyer notched her second of the contest and Kirr added another ten minutes later.

Notre Dame's 3-0 run once again put the Hoyas in the hole, but Georgetown fought back. With 8:04 remaining, sophomore midfielder Sophia Thomas (Lutherville, Md./Maryvale Prep) rattled off two quick goals to pull the Blue & Gray within one.

Georgetown had its chances to tie the game, but couldn't connect as UND managed two more scores putting the game out of reach and making the final, 15-12.

Five different Hoyas managed two goals each and a total of seven scored in the contest. Kirr led the way with two goals and an assist in what could be her final game on the Hilltop.

The Blue & Gray held a 13-12 advantage in ground balls, but was outshot, 33-23. Freshman Barb Black (Ruxton, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) had three saves in the cage.

Georgetown is among the top 20 in NCAA RPI and will wait for the NCAA Tournament selection show on Monday to see how many BIG EAST teams earn a bid into the tournament.
