WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad held its annual banquet Saturday evening at the Key Bridge Marriott. The banquet honored the 2011 squad for its accomplishments with the graduated seniors returning for the event. The seven team awards were announced and the squad's accomplishments were recognized.
Senior Logan McCraw (Malvern, Pa./Conestoga) was named the team's MVP. McCraw was a first team All-American honoree marking her second All-America award and her first-career nod to the first team. Last week, she was named First Team All-South Region by the IWLCA. The defender was a First Team All-BIG EAST selection and the BIG EAST Defender of the Year. The co-captain led the team in draw controls with 42 and ranked second in ground balls with 31. McCraw also has 15 caused turnovers to her credit as well as a goal and an assist. She is among the program's all-time leaders in draw controls. McCraw was a Second Team All-America selection as a junior making her one of just 14 players in program history to earn All-America honors twice in her career.
Senior Mary Wittelsberger (Parkton, Md./Hereford) won the Most Improved Award. She played in 15 games this past year on the attack. Wittelsberger posted three ground balls and two caused turnovers over the course of the season, as well as three goals and four assists for seven points. Wittelsberger made a huge impact as a senior despite limited playing time earlier in her career.
Senior attacker Jordy Kirr (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School) won the Bulldog Award, which is given to a player that displayed outstanding effort and contributions to the squad. Kirr earned her third-career nod to the All-South Region Second Team after an outstanding career on the Hilltop. Earlier in the season, the attacker received her fourth-consecutive All-BIG EAST honor and her first-career spot on the First Team. No other Hoyas had ever earned All-BIG EAST all four years on the Hilltop. Kirr led the Hoyas with 52 points on 26 goals and a team-best 26 assists. She is currently the only player in program history with 100 goals and 100 assists in her career and is the all-time leader in assists. The co-captain won BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week in 2011 as well as a spot on the weekly honor roll.
Freshman Hannah Franklin (Phoenix, Md./McDonogh School) was named the Sheehan Stanwick Rookie of the Year after an outstanding first season. Franklin appeared in all 17 games, scoring 17 times and contributing three assists. She also had 12 ground balls, seven draw controls and 10 caused turnovers.
Senior Mary Beth Brophy (Berwyn, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) received the Kim Simons Coaches Award for the player that best demonstrates the qualities of coachability, positive attitude and leadership. The midfielder played in 17 games rotating starts with eight to her credit. She had 16 goals and three assists on the year for 19 points. Brophy also caused nine turnovers and had seven draw controls. Brophy was a co-captain and the president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Sophomore Kelsi Bozel (Hunt Valley, Md./Notre Dame Prep) rounded out the awards ceremony receiving the Denis Kanach Hoya Award which is given for the unsung hero who best demonstrates unselfish play and true team spirit. Bozel had 20 goals and five assists for 25 points to rank fifth on the squad. She also had 19 ground balls and ranked second in draw controls with 34. Defensively she had 13 caused turnovers. Bozel earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Second Team.
Associate Sports Information Director Barbara Barnes was also honored as the squad's 13th man. Barnes has been with the program for three seasons and works with the coaches and student-athletes as the media liaison, statistician and public relations representative for the team.
The night concluded with the playing of the 2011 highlight video and remarks from both the Class of 2011 and the Class of 2012.
