Georgetown Track & Field Hosts Hoya Spiked Shoe Invitational

Jan. 19, 2012

WASHINGTON - For the second straight year, the Georgetown University track & field program will host the Hoya Spiked Shoe Invitational this Friday, January 20 at the Hanley Center for Athletic Excellence on the campus of Georgetown Preparatory School in Bethesda, Md. The Hoyas welcome the La Salle Explorers as well as a handful of post-collegiate runners for the second annual event. The meet is scheduled for 4 p.m. with the first running event occurring at 4:30 p.m., tentatively.

Coming off the most successful cross country season in GU women's history that saw the women win the NCAA championship, the Hoyas enter the 2012 indoor season with a preseason ranking of No. 23.

The event will feature a young Hoya men's squad that boasts a plethora of talented student-athletes, especially in the distance events. The event that is stacked with young Hoya talent will be the men's 1,000-meter run featuring freshman Omar Kaddurah (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc), sophomore Michael Reher (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prep) as well as Hoya veterans juniors Bobby Peavey (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam), Dylan Sorensen (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) and Andrew Springer (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) and seniors Brian Manning (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) and Theon O'Connor (Kingston, Jamaica/Campion College).

On the women's side, the lineup features a handful of All-Americans with eight-timer Emily Infeld (University Heights, Ohio/Beaumont) competing in the women's 1,000-meter run alongside fellow All-American Rachel Schneider (Dover, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) as well as senior Lauren Borduin (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge), a multi-time BIG EAST champion.

All-American Chelsea Cox (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) will be competing in the women's 500-meter dash as well as likely have a presence in the women's 4x400-meter relay.

This will be the third weekend the Hoyas have raced over the indoor season and both the men's and women's teams will use this opportunity to get as much race experience in as well as keep their performances tempered with their practice regimens leading into the 2012 postseason that starts February 18-19 when they travel to the Armory for the BIG EAST Championships.

There will also be a couple of GU student-athletes running unattached in the event as they are redshirting the indoor season.

The first event will begin at 4 p.m. with the men's long jump. The first track event is slated for 4:30 p.m., with the men's 60-meter hurdles and the meet will go until the final event of the night, the women's 4x400-meter relay, slated for 7:45 p.m.
