WASHINGTON - Georgetown University softball (12-17) went 2-0 on the final day of the UMBC Spring Classic with wins over Sacred Heart (7-13) 6-5 and Mount St. Mary's (6-17) by a score of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Sacred Heart took the early 1-0 lead off a solo home run in the second inning. The score remained 1-0 until the fifth inning when the Pioneers scored two more runs with the bases loaded to take a 3-0 lead.
The Hoyas came back to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth with a double from
Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) and a single from
Elyse Graziano (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) to put two runners on base.
Shikara Lowe (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) hit a triple to even the score.
Sacred Heart scored two runs in the top of the seventh to retake the lead.
With the score 5-3,
Alexandria Anttila (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) led off in the seventh with a double, followed by a quick single from Hyson. Graziano hit the sacrifice bunt to advance Anttila to score, making it a one run game.
Lowe stepped up to the plate with Hyson on base, hitting a walk-off home run to win the game for the Hoyas.
Freshman pitcher
Lauren O'Leary (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) picked up the win for the Blue & Gray with six strikeouts.
Georgetown took the early 1-0 lead against Mount St. Mary's in the fourth after several wild pitches with Lowe and
Cara Savarese (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) getting on base for the Hoyas.
Mount St. Mary's came back in the top of the fifth to even the score.
Anttila hit a home run in the seventh to reclaim the one run lead for the Hoyas, with Mount St. Mary's failing to score in the bottom of the seventh.
Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) pitched the win for Georgetown against Mount St. Mary's.
Georgetown softball returns to action on Thursday, March 22 for a game at George Washington. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. The contest against the Colonials will conclude the majority of the non-conference schedule for the Hoyas.
