Georgetown Falls to Notre Dame in Series Finale

Bethesda, Md. - Notre Dame scored three times in three-straight innings and cruised to a 14-2 win over Georgetown in the final game of a three-game series at Shirley Povich Field.

Georgetown was swept for the second time this season (USF) and falls to 18-21 overall and 5-10 in the BIG EAST, while Notre Dame improves to 22-16 and 9-6 in league play.

Freshman starting pitcher Jack Vander Linden (Dallas, Texas/Episcopal) worked through the lineup in order in the first, but ran into trouble second and loaded the bases with none out. The Irish scored three runs on a sacrifice fly from Charlie Markson, a single from Mac Hudgins and a single from Frank DeSico.

The Irish pushed the lead to 6-0 in the third, highlighted by an RBI double from Hudgins. A two-run home run from Trey Mancini in the fourth pushed the lead to 9-0.

Vander Linden went 3.0 innings, giving up six runs (two earned) on six hits, with two walks and two strikeouts. Freshman Will Brown (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) threw 2.0, giving up three runs on four hits with two strikeouts.

Redshirt senior Pablo Vinent (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit) gave up four runs on three hits in 2.0 innings, while redshirt senior Tommy Isaacs (Ponte Vedre Beach, Fla./Bolles) gave up one run in two-thirds of an inning. Freshman pitcher Matt Hollenbeck (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) threw 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to close out the game.

The Hoyas got on board in the bottom of the ninth inning when freshman first baseman Nick Gianforte (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) hit a two-run double to left, scoring freshman Ryan Busch (Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville Area), who had been hit by a pitch, and grad student Jim Laufer (Fairhaven, N.J./CBA), who singled. The Blue & Gray added two more runs when junior third baseman Trevor Matern (Santa Clarita, Calif./Hart) hit a two-run single to left, scoring Gianforte and senior catcher Nick Geary (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades), who had singled.

Redshirt junior shortstop Mike Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Douglas MacArthur) had two of Georgetown's hits, including a double.

Georgetown plays next on Tuesday, April 24, hosting George Mason at Shirley Povich Field. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
