April 21, 2012

Box Score

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team (19-27, 3-10 BIG EAST) took the second game of a doubleheader against Providence (15-29, 6-9 BIG EAST) on Saturday at Guy Mason Field by a score of 2-0. The Friars won the first game 3-0.

Both teams started slow in the first game. Lauren O'Leary (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) recorded five strikeouts and gave up just two hits in the first three innings. Providence scored its first run with two on and two outs in the third.

The Hoyas had a chance to even the score in the bottom of the third when Elyse Graziano (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart) was walked to lead off the inning. The sophomore advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Alexandria Anttila (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community). With one out gone, Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) hit a single and reached second on a fielding error by the friars.

Georgetown continued to get on base in the fourth. Cara Savarese (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) hit a single to left, followed by a near home run to the left fence by Hannah Slovacek (Austin, Texas/Westlake). The hit was a ground-ruled double. Jordan Hansen (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) hit a sacrifice bunt with one out, but Savarese was tagged out at the plate.

Providence went on to score on run in the sixth and one in the seventh. The Blue & Gray left a total of eleven runners on base in the first game.

The Hoyas got out to the early 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game. Taylor Koenig (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) ripped a single to left field with one out. Shikara Lowe (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) hit a two-run shot to left to score the only two runs of the game.

Savarese went three-for-three in the win over the Friars. The senior is on a five-game hitting streak. Sophomore Slovacek is also on a five-game hitting streak.

The Hoyas and Friars will finish the series tomorrow in a game slated for noon at Guy Mason Field. Georgetown will honor the four-year careers of seniors Mackensey Carter and Cara Savarese prior to first pitch.
