WASHINGTON - Junior Corbin Blakey (Alpharetta, Ga./Centennial) hit a two-run double in the seventh inning and junior pitcher Neal Dennison (Houston, Texas/Lamar) threw seven solid innings as the Georgetown baseball team held on to beat Seton Hall, 5-4, in the final game of a three-game BIG EAST Conference series at Shirley Povich Field Sunday afternoon.

The win salvaged the third game of the series as the Hoyas improve to 21-26 overall and 7-14 in the BIG EAST, while the Pirates fall to 28-20 overall and 13-8 in league play.

Leading only 3-1 after six innings, Georgetown added what would turn out to be two very important insurance runs in the seventh. Redshirt junior shortstop Mike Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Douglas MacArthur) was on first after a fielder's choice and Seton Hall reliever Frank Morris followed with a pair of walks, first to senior right fielder Rand Ravnaas (Fort Worth, Texas./All Saints' Episcopal) and then to senior catcher Kevin Johnson (Peabody, Mass./Belmont Hill), to load the bases. Blakey then laced a two-out double down the left field line, scoring Garza and Ravnaas to push the GU lead to 5-1.

The scoring ended there for Georgetown and it was all the Blue & Gray would need, but just barely.

Junior reliever Charles Steinman (Rockville Centre, N.Y./Chaminade) gave up a one-out double in the top of the eighth and then Will Walsh hit a two-run home run to right to make it 5-3. The next batter, Sal Annunziata, hit the first pitch over the left field wall, making it 5-4.

After the Hoyas went out in the bottom of the eighth, however, Steinman responded in the top of the ninth by striking the Pirates out in order, giving the Hoyas the important 5-4 win.

It was a solid outing for Dennison, who threw 7.0 innings and allowed only one run - in the first inning - on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts. He was aided by a solid defense behind him, turning three double plays.

Trailing 1-0 after the first inning, the Hoyas scored twice in the second to take the lead for good, 2-1. Johnson hit a double to center to lead off the inning a walk to Blakey put two runners on base. A sacrifice bunt from junior left fielder Paul Bello (Towaca, N.J./Delbarton) moved the runners up and a single through the left side from junior third baseman Trevor Matern (Santa Clarita, Calif./Hart) tied the game. With runners on the corners and one out, senior second baseman Andy Lentz (Farmington Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) hit a ground out to second, scoring Blakey and giving the Hoyas a 2-1 lead.

The lead grew to 3-1 in the fourth when Garza singled to right with two out, scoring Bello, who had hit a leadoff single, moved to second on a bunt from Matern and to third on an infield single from junior center fielder Justin Leeson (Exton, Pa./West Chester).

Georgetown is back in action on Wednesday, May 9, hosting Delaware State at Shirley Povich Field. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
