WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team will have its first true home contest on Monday afternoon as the squad hosts the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles in a non-conference matchup. The Hoyas are currently 1-0-0 overall after defeating the University of Virginia, 2-1, in overtime on Friday. Georgetown will kickoff against the Eagles at 1 p.m.
Georgetown downed Virginia on Friday at the Maryland SoccerPlex to open the season with a victory in the ACC/BIG EAST Challenge.
Junior forward Steve Neumann (New Hope, Pa./Council Rock North) started off with a bang, scoring the first goal of the season just ten seconds into the contest. The Cavaliers evened the score in the second half, and the Hoyas held on to forced overtime. In the 96th minute, sophomore Tom Skelly (Albuquerque, N.M./Shattuck St. Mary's) served in a ball and a UVA defender attempted to head it out, but shot the ball into the net for an own goal and the 2-1 decision.
It was just the second time in nine tries that the Hoyas defeated Virginia.
Georgetown is led by Neumann who has one goal on the year for two points. Sophomore goalkeeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) has three saves and a .750 save percentage.
FGCU will continue its two-game season-opening road trip on Monday.
The Eagles fell at No. 2 Akron, 4-0, on Friday night in front of a crowd of 4,440 fans. FGCU's loss at Akron moved it to 3-3 in season openers as it rolled out a starting lineup that featured five members of its 12-member freshmen class and three sophomores. The Eagles graduated nine players from last year's club that finished with a 12-6-2 overall record, claimed its second straight Atlantic Sun regular season title and made the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance.
This is the first meeting between the squads and the first meeting for the Hoyas and an Atlantic Sun opponent.
Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at North Kehoe Field. Live stats and a webcast featuring Dan Helfrich will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
