Vander Linden, Busch, Hollenbeck Selected as Baseball Captains

Nov. 24, 2014

WASHINGTON - Head Coach Pete Wilk and the Georgetown baseball team have selected the three captains for the upcoming 2015 season. Redshirt senior Jack Vander Linden (Dallas, Texas/Episcopal School of Dallas) and seniors Ryan Busch (Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville Area) and Matt Hollenbeck (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) will lead the Hoyas this spring.

"I am very happy to have Jack, Ryan and Matt leading our team as captains this season," Wilk said. "These three young men all bring excellent leadership qualities to the table, and I am confident that they will help lead this team to reach its full potential this season."

This is Vander Linden's second season as a co-captain for the Hoyas. Last season, Vander Linden was Georgetown's Opening Day starter. He was 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in his first two starts before his season was cut short due to injury. At the time, he was leading the country with 19.5 strikeouts per nine innings. In 2013, Vander Linden led the Hoya pitching staff with a 3-5 record and a 4.13 ERA in 13 starts. The 6-5 right-hander finished with team-highs in both strikeouts (46) and innings pitched (69.2).

Busch started at shortstop in all 41 games that he appeared last season, batting .317 for the year to rank third on the team. He led the Hoyas with 13 stolen bases and his 13 doubles tied for the team lead. His 39 runs scored not only led the team, he was among the leaders in the BIG EAST with almost one run scored per game. During the course of the season, Busch had a 12-game hitting streak and an 18-game on-base streak.

Hollenbeck had a strong campaign for the Hoyas in 2014, both as a starter and out of the bullpen. The southpaw made 18 appearances on the mound, compiling a 5-2 record and a 3.18 ERA. He led the pitching staff in ERA, tied for the team lead in wins, finished second with 50 strikeouts and was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll during Georgetown's spring break trip to Florida. Hollenbeck finished the season strong, pitching seven innings and recording a career-high eight strikeouts in wins over Villanova and Butler.

Over the summer, Hollenbeck pitched for the Falmouth Commodores in the prestigious Cape Cod League. He registered a 1-0 record with a 1.35 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 13.1 innings in nine regular-season appearances. In the postseason, he started in the deciding third game of the second round, giving up just two hits and two runs in four innings as Falmouth won to advance to the championship round.

"It's an honor to be named one of the co-captains of the squad," Hollenbeck said. "We have the most potential I've seen in my four years here, and I can't wait to see where this team will end up in the spring."

Georgetown finished the 2014 season with a 19-29 overall record and a 5-13 mark in the BIG EAST, including winning four of its final six conference games.
