WASHINGTON - The Georgetown men's tennis squad (4-1) won its fourth-straight spring match when they defeated the Richmond Spiders (2-4) on Wednesday afternoon, 4-3.

The squad was able to grab the first point before splitting the singles play, 3-3, for the win behind the tough and strong doubles play in two close matches that favored Georgetown.

Junior Alex Tropiano (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) and sophomore Daniel Khanin (Baldwin, N.Y./Pendleton) were paired for the first time this spring and got the win in the No. 2 position for Georgetown. Last fall, Tropiano and Khanin went 3-1 as a doubles pairing.

Freshmen Yannik Mahlangu (Henderson, Nev./Green Valley) and Jack Murphy (Coronado, Calif./La Jolla Country Day) moved to 3-0 in dual doubles play this spring when they defeated Richmond's Jonathan Quenard and Dylan Trent in the No. 3 position for the Hoyas, 6-5(5).

Senior co-captain Casey Distaso (The Woodlands, Texas/Edmond North), who dropped his doubles match with freshman Max Novak (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School), grabbed his fourth singles win in the No. 3 position for the Hoyas which he won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.

In the No. 4 position, Murphy won his fifth spring duals match to move to 5-0 in 2014. His five spring singles victories are a team best. Murphy is now 14-4 overall for fall and spring play for his freshmen campaign.

In addition to his doubles victory, Tropiano defeated Richmond's Noah Fenton after dropping the first set. The long three-set affair ended, 1-6, 6-5(1), 6-4, in favor of the Georgetown junior.

The men are next in action this weekend in New Haven, Conn. when they take on Yale at noon on Sat., Feb. 8 and Bryant University at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
