GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNCG Spartans pounded out 18 hits, including seven extra base hits, defeating the Georgetown baseball team 14-3 on Saturday afternoon.
Will Brown (Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca) struggled on the mound for the Hoyas, going three innings while giving up six runs on nine hits. Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) homered and walked for the Hoyas and Steve Anderson (Albany, N.Y./Northfield Mt. Hermon Prep (Mass.)/Guilderland) singled in the second inning to extend his hitting streak to five games, totaling 10 hits in that span. AC Carter (Winter Park, Fla./Orangewood Christian) had two singles and an RBI. Felix van der Vaart (Annandale, Va./Flint Hill School) pitched 2.1 innings of relief in his first career outing.
Collins gave the Hoyas (3-5) an early lead in the top of the first with his first home run of the season, a towering shot that went well over the right field wall.
The lead was short lived as UNCG (4-5) responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. After a one-out single and stolen base, the Spartans got a bloop single and a double, both with two outs, to take a 2-1 lead.
Four more hits in the bottom of the second, including two more doubles, plated two more runs for the Spartans to extend their lead to 4-1. Another double and a home run to left brought the lead to 6-1 after three innings, chasing Brown.
Collins led off the top of the fourth with a walk and Christian Venditti (Newtonville, Mass./St. Sebastian's School) immediately singled to put runners on first and second with no outs for Anderson. After a lengthy at-bat, Anderson flew out to shallow left and Collins was doubled off at second. Venditti proceeded to steal second and Carter singled him in to cut the deficit to 6-2.
The Spartans added three more runs, only one of them being earned, in the sixth inning off of van der Vaart and Jordan Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill./New Trier/Lawrenceville). They scored five more times in the seventh.
Three straight singles by Ryan Busch (Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville Area), Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) and Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) gave the Hoyas their third run in the top of the eighth.
Georgetown will look to avoid a sweep in the series finale on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. Freshman Chris Giordano (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland) is scheduled to start on the mound for the Blue & Gray.
