QUEENS, N.Y. - The Georgetown baseball team scored five runs in the top half of the seventh inning, but gave up two in the bottom half, ultimately falling 7-6 to St. John's in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. The game was played at the Red Storm's Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Georgetown fell to 15-23 overall and 1-9 in the BIG EAST while St. John's improved to 25-14 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
Starting pitcher Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) battled through 5.2 innings. He gave up five runs, although only one was earned, on six hits and six walks. Steve Anderson (Albany, N.Y./Northfield Mt. Hermon Prep (Mass.)/Guilderland) had three RBI for the Hoyas and Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./St. Mary's) and Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) each doubled, were on base twice, scored a run and had an RBI.
St. John's scored a run in each of the first two innings, as Smith struggled early with his control. A single and three walks gave the Red Storm their first run in the first and a leadoff walk and two-out throwing error added a run in the second for a 2-0 lead.
Another unearned run in the bottom of the fifth extended St. John's lead to 3-0.
The Hoyas got on the board in the top of the sixth, scoring a run without the benefit of a hit. Ryan Busch (Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville Area) reached on an error by the shortstop. After he stole second, Webber walked and Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) reached on an error by the second baseman to load the bases. Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Busch to cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Red Storm got it back with two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth, taking a 5-1 lead.
The bats finally came alive for the Hoyas in the top of the seventh as they sent 10 men to the plate, scoring five times. AC Carter (Winter Park, Fla./Orangewood Christian) led off with a single through the left side, giving the Hoyas their first hit of the night. After Patrick Camporini (Safety Harbor, Fla./ Clearwater Central Catholic) walked, Bialkowski hit a hard double down the left field line, scoring Carter. Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) grounded out to second, allowing Camporini to score and Bialkowski to move to third. Following a walk to Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge), Webber lined a two-out double down the right field line, scoring Bialkowski. One batter later, Anderson smoked a single into left-center, plating both Kuzbel and Webber to give Georgetown its first lead of the game, 6-5.
With Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison) in to pitch in the bottom of the seventh, St. John's promptly tied things back up with a home run on the first pitch. After two consecutive singles, a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly scored the eventual game-winning run.
The two teams resume their three-game series on Saturday at 1 p.m. David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) is scheduled to take the mound for the Blue & Gray.
Notes - Camporini's walk in the bottom of the seventh extended his on-base streak to 22 consecutive games.
