Sept. 1, 2014 WASHINGTON - Georgetown University sophomore defender Joshua Yaro (Santa Barbara, Calif./Cate School) was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Monday as the BIG EAST Conference released its first men's soccer weekly honors of the 2014 season. Additionally, senior goalkeeper Tomas Gomez (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) earned a spot on the weekly honor roll.
The No. 9 Hoyas (0-0-2) opened the season with back-to-back double overtime ties at the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic this weekend in Bloomington, Ind., on the campus of Indiana University. On Friday, the Blue & Gray played to a draw with the host Hoosiers, 1-1, after 110 minutes of play. Georgetown followed that up with a scoreless tie against the reigning national champions, the No. 1 University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
It marks the first time in program history that GU has started the season with a pair of ties.
Yaro played a significant role in both games and was named to the all-tournament team for his efforts. The sophomore made a big stop on the goal line in the IU game and came up with some blocks late against the Irish to keep the shutout for the Blue & Gray.
The recognition marks Yaro's first-career weekly honor from the conference.
Gomez also held it down on defense allowing just one goal in two games and shutting out the Irish. The captain had three saves in Friday's matchup and posted an impressive seven stops in the UND shutout. He played all 220 minutes to open the season.
This is Gomez's eighth-career nod to the weekly honor roll and his first of the 2014 season.
Georgetown will open up at home on Friday against Harvard University. The match is scheduled for 4 p.m. Live stats and webcast featuring Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser will be available through www.GUHoyas.com.
